I got a ‘99 Malibu and i’m pretty sure my head gasket is blown. I have bad overheating going on and im losing a lot of coolant. I have to add half a cup of coolant every 2-3 days. When I asked my mechanic about it he said I gotta have the whole gasket replaced. Problem is that I don’t have the $1450 to have that done. Do I have have any options or am I screwed? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Older model Malibus like yours are usually susceptible to head gasket problems. I’ve been a mechanic for almost 12 years now and I’ve seen 2 other pre-2000 Malibus blow their head gasket. In those situations the owners decided to have the gasket replaced and that is usually the best thing to do. In your circumstance, their is a pretty inexpensive substitute you could try. Their are a bunch of different sealers made by different companies that I have heard work most of the time. You can buy them online but Im not sure as to which one has the best success rate. Hopefully someone comes across this thread that could give us some more info about the different sealer companies.

I just did a little research on sealers after reading your quick reply. It looks like some of the bigger names are Fusion, Blue Devil, Steel Seal, and Bar’s. Fusion claims to have a super long lasting repair life and they dont use waterglass which they say cracks off of aluminum engines. From what I read it looks like Fusion should work well with my engine. They even offer a formula for my V6 engine. Should I go with the Fusion sealer?

Head gasket blown?

Pretty sure that Fusion is the best one on the market. Their 2-Part Flex ePoxy formula is no joke. Its stronger and I think more flexible than Blue devil, themogasket, and bars. I’ve personaly tried blue devil and it helped but after two weeks, it was like I never did anything. All of my symptoms came back and some were worse than before. I had to get my gasket sealed so I looked online again and after an hour of research, I went with Fusion. I was able to get my Malibu sealed the same day I got the package. Its been about a month and I haven’t noticed anything fishy.

Thanks for all the replies, I see that Fusion is being recommended alot. I’ll order the Chevy V6 formula and update you all on what happens after I get it in the engine.

Super-helpful thread. I came here cause my head gasket just blew on my ‘97 Malibu, just ordered some Fusion to see if it’ll help.

I got my Malibu’s head gasket sealed! Thanks again for all your help. I thought it would take a few hours to get the gasket sealed, but it only took 2 hours to get the repair completed. Hopefully it’ll last for awhile, long enough for me to save up enough to get the gasket replaced. Or maybe if the sealer lasts lasts a long time, I’ll just do a re-application.

The Fusion Chevy V6 formula worked fine for me too. It costed more than I had hoped but, I’m glad I went with them cause the reviews aren’t so great for most other sealer companies.
