Hi all, can someone give me some info on how to replace my head gasket. I have a 2001 chevrolet malibu thats been blowing white smoke from the tailpipe for the last 50 miles. As soon as i noticed it was blowing smoke, i drove it to my mechanic and apperently I can purchase a new head gasket for under $200 but the labor would cost like $1600. Instead of having my mechanic do it for this ridiculous cost, I want to replace the head myself. I have alot of knowledge when it comes to auto mobiles and there engines. That being said, what should my first steps be to replace my own head gasket?
Unless youre a trained mechanic, it would be a bad idea to do this unless you do a lot of research on how to replace a head gasket. You’d also need to purchase a lot of tools to get this repair done. If youre looking for a cheaper alternative to seal your head gasket, Look up Fusion sealers. I had overheating in my ‘06 DTS and I did’nt want to spend $2000 to get my gasket fixed. I needed to do research to see if I could find a cheaper way to get my gasket sealed. I learned that fusion is the best option to get you head gasket sealed cause unlike a lot of the other sealer companies, fusion doesn’t use water-glass. waterglass cracks off of aluminum engines which is what most engines are made of.
Okay Cadi, ill check it out when I get home, just checking in on this forum from my work computer.
I haven’t had any problems with fusion in the past. Im a retired mechanic and i’ve been a mechanic for over 30 years. I’ve tried just about every sealer on the market and from what I can tell as of 2018, fusion has the strongest formula and because of that, they have one of the best success rates in the industry. It got to the point where if someone brought their vehicle in with a headgasket problem, I would automatically recommend fusion to them because its pretty expensive for people to have their head gasket replaced. I guess ill do the same thing ive always done, try out fusion, it should get your gasket sealed for less money than if you were going to replace the gasket. -Vintaje63
Appreciate your reply joke, I’ve put the order through for a fusion chevy kit and I honestly can’t wait to get it. Glad I posted on here cause I would’ve never thought to try a sealer.
In my opinion, I would prioritize getting your head gasket replaced because usually sealers suck. I’ve tried blue devil and steel seal in the same car and it still didn’t fix my blown head gasket. Never heard of fusion but my guess is that it probably wont work either. Getting your head gasket replaced would probably be the best option because it will fix your problem guarenteed.
Fusion saved my malibu! thanks again for all your guys’ help. As I said I never would’ve found it without your help. I wanted my repair to go perfectly so I took my car to the mechanic for him to do it. All together it costed $250 and im satisfied because according to their website, the fusion repair should last 6 years until I have to do it again. take care guys, and if anyone stumbles across this thread with head gasket problems, try fusion.
